Day 1: Discussion
Here
is
the problem statement we have to work on:
The manager of a cafeteria is interested in finding ways that
technology can help him or her to make a more efficient job in managing
the cafeteria. Particularly, the manager wants to create a set of
accurate data for inventory that would help him or her understand the
information involved with managing the cafeteria--such as what food
there is in stock, the service performance of the employees, the
efficiency of the service provided in the cafeteria etc. Also, the
manager wants to use technology to help him or her make better
decisions about how much food to prepare.
Here
are
some activities that can help you tackle this problem:
- Discuss ways in which you can improve the efficiency in
managing the cafeteria. In particular, consider the role of technology.
For example, if you are considering a cash register, think whether the
cash register improves the efficiency of the line in the cafeteria.
What other factors can you think of improving the management of the
cafeteria? How can technology be useful?
- The manager wants to create a set of accurate data for
inventory that would help him or her understand the information
involved with managing the cafeteria--such as what food there is in
stock, the service performance of the employees, the efficiency of the
service provided in the cafeteria etc. What database system would you
recommend? How can you find out about what fits best to your cafeteria?
What do you need in order to use this database (e.g., training;
software, hardware needs etc.). How can you find out that the database
system improves the efficiency of the cafeteria?
- Before, or after you explore various possibilities in terms
of the point-of-sale database you want to use, make a decision based on
criteria that you choose. Suggest ways in which you will implement the
Point-of-Sale--Cash Register to explore whether it improves the
efficiency of the cafeteria.
