Connections to Standards

- Connections to NCTM Standards

In general, this module is aligned with the first four NCTM Standards--Mathematics as Problem Solving, Mathematics as Communication, Mathematics as Reasoning, and Mathematical Connections. Specifically, this module is aligned with Standard 11 (Statistics).

NCTM STANDARD 11: STATISTICS

Use experimental and theoretical probability, as appropriate, to represent and solve problems involving probability
Use simulations to estimate probabilities

CONTENT STANDARDS: 9-12

(a) In Content Standard A: Use technology and mathematics to improve investigations and communications.

(b) In Content Standard E: Develop abilities and understandings about science and technology.

FOR MATHEMATICS:
(a) 8.b.4a: Represent algebraic concepts with physical materials, words, diagrams, tables, graphs, equations, and inequalities and use appropriate technology

(b) 10.A.5: Construct statistics-based presentation, individually and as members of a team to communicate and justify the results of a project

(c) 10.B.4 and 10.B.5: Design and execute surveys or experiments, gather data to answer relevant questions, and communicate results and conclusions to an audience using traditional methods and contemporary technology; Design a statistical experiment to answer a question about a realistic situation, conduct experiment, use statistics to interpret the data, and communicate the results, individually and as members of a team.

FOR SCIENCE:

(a) Goal 11.A.5e. Report, display and defend the results of investigations to audiences that may include professional and technical experts

(b) Goal 11.B.5c. Choose a model and refine its design based on the test results.

(c) Goal 13.B.4e. Evaluate claims derived from purported scientific studies used in advertising and marketing strategies.

FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS:

(a) 3.B.5 Using contemporary technology, produce documents of publication quality for specific purposes and audiences; exhibit clarity of focus, logic of organization, appropriate elaboration and support and overall coherence.

(b) 3.C.5a Communicate information and ideas in narrative, informative and persuasive writing with clarity and effectiveness in a variety of written forms using appropriate traditional and/or electronic formats; adapt content, vocabulary, voice and tone to the audience, purpose and situation

(c) 4.B.5a Deliver planned and impromptu oral presentations, as individuals and members of a group, conveying results of research, projects or literature studies to a variety of audiences (e.g., peers, community, business/industry, local organizations) using appropriate visual aids and available technology
