How Much Space Does a Gallon Need?

Your class has been assigned to design a fish tank for the fish that you will be getting in your class. There will be four fish, each 3 inches long. Keep in mind that fish tank sizes are usually given in gallons. This excersise will help you gain understanding how to estimate a gallon.

What we are comparing here is the capacity of these containers.

Homework:

1- Research to see if there is a guideline for how many gallons a fish needs to live.

2- What capacity does a gallon have?

You will be shown examples of containers, indicate whether you think the shape will hold less than a gallon, a gallon, or more than a gallon.

 Container # Holds less than a gallon Holds exactly a gallon Holds more than a gallon Correct? 1 (i.e. cereal box) 2 (i.e. can) 3 (i.e. platter) 4 (i.e. bowl) 5 6

Now get in your groups and compare answers. Record below the group consensus for each shape. You may aske to see the containers again.

HOW DID YOU DO?

As the shapes are filled record check the column if you were correct.

What was your personal number of correct?

What was the groups number of correct?

Step 1: Learning to write the VOLUME formula understanding VOLUME

Step 2: Creating the Fish Tank
