FileMaker Pro DataBase HowTo Use Layouts

Using "Layout #1"

The first step in learning to use layouts is learning to modify the initial layout. When you define your fields FileMaker Pro creates a default layout called "Layout #1." If you recall the layout when you first create a database, the fields are in one neat column. Also, the boxes to enter the data are all the same size.

In order to change the positions and sizes of the fields you need to modify the layout. In the template database you have open the layout called "Layout #1" is what the fields first looked like when I formed the database. You can view this layout by using the Layout Pop-up Menu. It is in the upper left corner and should read "Student..." Click on this button and select "Layout #1." This layout looks very different from the other layouts in this database. I have created this database so that you can see all the layout forms possible through FileMaker Pro.

FileMaker Pro automatically places you in Browse Mode when you first create your fields. When you are ready to design where the fields are then you need to switch to Layout Mode. You do this by going to "Mode" in the Menu Options and selecting "Layout."   Remember you are changing Modes so it makes sense to look under the Menu option "Mode."

Once in Layout Mode the tool panel in the status area should have changed to include more buttons for modifying your layout. The first thing to try is to select one of the fields. Notice that there are black marks indicating that the field is selected. Once you have the field selected you can click and drag on a corner or side to change the shape of the field. You can also move the field to a new location. At this point I suggest familiarizing yourself as much as possible with the layout possibilities before moving to multiple layouts.

Your task: Try to make Layout #1 in the template database look nice!

Once you feel comfortable with that it is time to make multiple layouts...
