Comparing the Median and Mean


The dotted line marks where the mean is on the y-axis.


Now compare the mean with the median.

If you look closely, there are only four scores below the mean and six scores above, whereas the median has five scores on either side. Why is the mean lower than the median?

Think about that question as you look at the next example, the dice game.
