The mean score on a given test can be found for an entire class. Take a look at this American History class:

Ralph | 68 | ..... | Marcus | 97 |
Chi Bo | 92 | ..... | Donnie | 85 |
We find the mean score, by adding all the scores together and dividing by 10 (the number of scores).
In a way, it is like we lump all the points together,then divide them equally amongst the students.
