Charting the course: Developing statistical indicators of the quality of undergraduate mathematics education

Volume IV:
Indicator CD-ROM

The goal of the project is to develop indicators that help to measure and describe the quality of undergraduate mathematics education. This CD-ROM serves as a catalog of those indicators. The indicators are categorized within strategic issues in undergraduate mathematics education that the project sought to address. Within each issue, there is a summary statement of the issue followed by the associated indicators. For each indicator, one can find the statement of the indicator, the source of data collected to inform this indicator, how the indicator is calculated, and the actual data calculation of that indicator for each site. Included are selected graphs and tables that illustrate the data.

The content and structure of the CD-ROM are illustrated by the following diagram.

This is a fully navigational resource in CD-ROM format. The disk contains interactive versions of all data collection devices and data archives, prominently, the surveys administered to three groups: (1) department representatives, (2) faculty, and (3) students at each site. The CD-ROM also includes a bibliography of relevant research and scholarly writings that address these indicator-related issues in undergraduate mathematics education.

The CD-ROM is a fully self-contained entity, but one that also could interact with the Internet. All of the resources contained on the CD-ROM is also available on the Internet at the project web-site. However, the CD-ROM functions much more quickly as one does not have to negotiate download times of large data files and databases over the Internet.

On the other hand, the Indicators web site provides a searchable interface that enables one to search via the following two fields:

If a person were to search for a particular keyword (e.g., multiple representations), the database could produce all issues and indicators that address "multiple representations."

Privacy concerns: Faculty ID, year of birth, and year of degree are protected in these files. Student SSNs are coded. For details, please contact MSTE Office.
