Paper: Students' Views of Learning Calculus through Active Learning: The Merit Workshop Program for Emerging Scholars in Mathematics at the University of Illinois (December 7, 2000)
I am currently the director of this program at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign (UIUC). This program is for minorities, women, and students from small high schools who are majoring in mathematics, science, or engineering and show otential for succeeding in their major. I have done much work with this program these last two years and continue to work on making it better. Paper: Mathematics and Technology Workshop at Astoria High School Summer 2000 (December 5, 2000)
During one week in the summer of 2000 Lucas Allen and I conducted this workshop at the high school in Astoria, Illinois. We introduced the students to various applications of mathematics and technology, as well as some hands-on activities. I also conducted surveys, interviews, and observations of the workshop, which I used to write a paper describing the workshop. The workshop seemed to be a huge success! I have been asked to teach for Summermath 2001, which is a workshop that will be held June 11- July 6 at the Technology Center of DuPage. While at UIUC I have been responsible for the teaching assistants (TA's) for all of the college algebra sections. I have also chosen the undergraduate teaching assistants and set-up a tutoring room for the students. Paper: Math in the Museum
I took this course in the Spring of 1999 with Nancy Powell and compiled a large binder lesson plans and activities in mathematics. My project for this course was integrating mathematics into the Museum of Science and Industry, which is located in Chicago, Illinois. Talk: Incorporating the history of calculus into the mathematics curriculum. This course involved several projects in the history of calculus along with a presentation. My presentation discussed techniques of teaching calculus and the history of calculus. See two additional papers I completed for the course:
History of Calculus
Geometric Series
During the Spring of 1999 I set up a mentoring program at Urbana High School. The mentors were all U of I students, ranging from mathematics majors to education majors to engineering majors to medical students.
