Lesson:  Gradual metamorphosis versus complete metamorphosis

Grade: 3rd

Objective:  The students will know gradual metamorphosis. They will be able to distinguish between the two stages.

Material:  Journal, pencil, chalkboard.

Procedure: The teacher will inform the students that there are two kinds of metamorphosis.  In gradual metamorphosis, the nymphal stages resemble the adult except that they do not have wings and the nymphs may be colored differently than the adults.  Nymphs and adults usually occupy similar habitats and have similar hosts.  Gradual metamorphosis is when the egg changes to the nymph then becomes an adult.  The complete metamorphosis is when the egg changes to the larva stage and then to the pupa and then to and an adult. In gradual metamorphosis, the nymphal stages resemble the adult except that they do not have wings and the nymphs may be colored differently than the adults. Nymphs and adults usually occupy similar habitats and have similar hosts. Gradual metamorphosis is typical of true bugs and grasshoppers; complete metamorphosis is typical of butterflies, beetles, flies, moths, and wasps. The immature of the butterflies, beetles flies moths and wasps do not resemble the adults, may occupy different habitats, and feed on different hosts. The teacher will show them the labeled diagram of the two stages and let the students draw in their journal..  Literature-The teacher could use the lesson to write an essay.  Art-Drawing  the different stages of the life cycle.

Assessment:  The students would be able to determine the different stages by the characteristics of the insect.  They will be discussing about the gradual and complete metamorphosis.  They will be able to write in their journal about the difference between the two stages. They will be able to draw complete and gradual metamorphosis.

Few difference were made with little detail

Would draw and label the gradual metamorphosis

Clearly drew and labeled the parts of the stage.

Drew and labeled most of the stage.

Drew and did not label the parts clearly

Would be able to draw the complete metamorphosis

Clearly drew and labeled the parts of the stage.

Drew and labeled most of the stage.

Drew and did not label the parts clearly.
