Introduction Lesson

Let's Go on a Pattern Hunt!

Grade level: 4th
Time:  40-50 minute class period
Prerequistite Knowledge:
    -Students should know a pattern is and how to identify them.
Objectives: 
    -Students will demonstrate thier knowledge of patterns by identifying them in a variety of settings.
    -Students will familiraize themselves with the patterns that can be found in different evironments.
Materials:  pattern booklet, chalk (for rubbings), pencils/crayons/markers/colored pencils.
Procedure:
1.  The teacher will demonstrate how to do rubbings on objects/surfaces with texture.
2.   Students will each recieve a pattern booklet and a piece of chalk, and be instructed to get out thier own pencils, markers, etc.
3.   The students will be given about 30 minutes to explore the classroom, school, and school playground looking for patterns.  They will have to find at least two patterns in each setting.
4.   The students will record each pattern they find, writing where they found it and what it is of.  If possible they will do a rubbing of it or sketch it.
5.   At the end of the 30 minutes the students will return to class and share what they found.
Assessment:
    The students will be evaulated on the completeness of their booklets.
        All patterns found and sketched or rubbed = 5
        One or two patterns missing or not sketched or rubbed = 4
        Three patterns missing or not sketched or rubbed = 3
        Four patterns missing or not sketched or rubbed = 2
        Five patterns missing or not sketched or rubbed  =1

Students will write about what they did and what they learned in their math journals.
